The Atlantic magazine published some pundits’ predictions about how the Supreme Court will rule on a case involving a gun ban in Chicago. Which of them do you most agree with? How should the 2nd Amendment be interpreted?
Dahlia Lithwick also recently wrote in her Newsweek article “Innocent Until Executed” about a recent Supreme Court decision with big civil liberties implications. People on death row do not have a Constitutional right to DNA evidence that could prove their innocence. What do you think of the Court’s reasoning?
This week’s edition of Newsweek includes an article by Dahlia Lithwick called “Heart of Darkness” in which she discusses the Supreme Court’s approval ratings and the public’s perception of the ideological position of the court. Do you buy her argument that there is a disconnect between the court’s ideological make-up and the public’s perception of it? Why or why not? She also gives a preview of the 2009 term. We will follow several of the issues she mentions as the court takes them on.
Welcome to my blog for students in AP U.S. Government & Politics at Parkside High School. I will periodically post ideas and links of interest to students enrolled in the course. Please view this as a place to share ideas, thoughts, and information beyond the physical and temporal limits of our class sessions. I hope you find it interesting. In contributing to discussions, please remember that this forum is an extension of our classroom. Responses to posts will rarely be required, but can help improve the course participation portion of your grade.
