			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.musicteachersblog.com/2009/10/interactive-whiteboards-using-them-in-the-music-classroom/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-234" title="whiteboardimage" src="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/03/whiteboardimage.jpg" alt="whiteboardimage" width="146" height="102" /></a>In Wicomico County we are so very fortunate to have access to a wide variety of technologies.  The latest and greatest thing to be spreading across the county is the interactive whiteboard.  Now, the idea of an interactive whiteboard is not new but it is continually being improved upon.  Basically all interactive white boards display what is on your computer onto a white board.   Most white boards come with their own software.  It is the software that allows teachers to create lessons that involve the students to a greater degree than ever before. </p>
<p>In our county we have three different versions of interactive white boards. </p>
<p><strong>          <a href="http://www.einstruction.com/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-230" title="einstruction-logo" src="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/03/einstruction-logo.jpg" alt="einstruction-logo" width="102" height="64" /></a></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Interwrite:</strong>  To use interwrite you need a laptop, an lcd projector <a href="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/03/iw1.jpg"></a>and either an e-beam or a schoolpad.  The lcd projector projects whatever is on the computer onto the white board.  You can either use the e-beam or the schoolpad to manipulate the items on the computer displayed on the whiteboard.  Interwrite is the software most commonly used for this type of set up. </li>
</ul>
<p>           <a href="http://smarttech.com/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-231" title="st_logo_001" src="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/03/st_logo_001.jpg" alt="st_logo_001" width="172" height="63" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>SMART:</strong>  With the SMART system teachers can create lessons that allow manipulation of words, pictures and shapes in order to help students understand curriculum content.  Teachers and students can manipulate items displayed on the board or write using their fingers or with the &#8220;pens&#8221; provided by SMART.</li>
</ul>
<p>            <a href="http://www.prometheanplanet.com/" target="_blank"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-233" title="prom_logo" src="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/03/prom_logo.gif" alt="prom_logo" width="138" height="52" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Promethean:</strong>  With the Promethean system teachers can create interactive lessons that engage students.  Items displayed on the board can be minipulated with the use of a stylus.  The stylus is also used for writing on the board.  Teachers who teach in a room where there is a Promethean board also have access to a slate and Activotes.  The slate is used for manipulating items or writing on the board from a distance.  This is helpful if you don&#8217;t like to be &#8220;tied&#8221; to the front of the room.  The Activotes are a wonderful tool that allow for electronic every pupil response.  Teachers can create quizes in advance or give a quick exit ticket using these remote control response devices.</li>
</ul>
<p>While each system has its advantages and disadvantages they all offer the opportunity for engagement, motivation, and student achievement.   Some people may be concerned that the whiteboard will have the opposite affect of engagement.  They have visions of students staring mindlessly at a board in a darkened classroom.  I am not here to tell you that a whiteboard is a magic bullet that will fix all that ails education.  Teaching is as it always has been the teacher is now and always has been the biggest  factor affecting student achievement.  The board is only as valuable as the teacher utilizing it.  Teachers using an interactive white board will implement best practices while using the interactive board.  The board will enhance their own practice and enable teachers greater flexibility for student engagement and motivation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/02/ipod_touch1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-202" title="ipod_touch" src="http://blogs.wcboe.org/wcpsenewsletter/files/2010/02/ipod_touch1.jpg" alt="ipod_touch" width="75" height="123" /></a>A few years ago, I was lucky enough to win an iPod touch in a random drawing.  I was so excited.  I couldn&#8217;t wait to listen to music on it.  Then I discovered the apps.  I had so much fun browsing all the free or practically free apps.  As with most of us it didn&#8217;t take me long to wonder how I could use this in my instruction. </p>
<p>It has taken me a while to figure out all the ins and outs of it, and even now I don&#8217;t think I have even scratched the surface.  Those apps I had so much fun browsing and playing with?    There are thousands, and they are awesome and fun.  Many are free or very cheap.  Among, the fun and amazing apps are many, many educational apps.  Everything from graphing calculators and periodic tables to phonics apps that help children hear and learn their letters.  Several schools in our county have been fortunate enough to be able to purchase class sets of iPods.  The wonderful thing about a class set of iPods is that you can purchase one .99 app and share it to all the iPods in the set.  Very economical!</p>
<p>There are some things you want to be aware of before using an iPod Touch.  Firstly, you must use iTunes to manage the content on your iPod.  You can sync it at home on your home computer, but unless you are at a school with a class set, you cannot access iTunes from a county computer.   When you sync the material you select in your iTunes library goes on your iPod.  It is a one-way transfer.  It will transfer purchases you have made.  You can authorize up to 5 computers to sync your library to, however, you can only purchase or change information on your iPod from your &#8220;Home&#8221; computer (the computer that you first sync to).</p>
<p>Here are some of my favorite apps:</p>
<p><strong>General</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Whiteboard</strong> (Free) You can draw on your iPod like it is a whiteboard, but the really fun part is that if you have more than one iPod on the same network they can link up and you can share a whiteboard.  Students can collaboratively edit math problems or drawings or ask and respond to questions.</li>
<li><strong>iSign Lite</strong> (Free) Has an alphabetical listing of words.  Click on the word to see a video of the sign for that word.  Includes a quiz to test your sign language skills.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Math</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=289940142&amp;mt=8" target="_blank"><strong>Graphing Calculator</strong></a> (.99)</li>
<li><strong>PopMath Lite</strong> (Free) Bubbles with addition problems (if you want other operations you have to purchase the full version) and answers float over the ipod.  Players match bubbles with correct answer and the progress to a more difficult level.</li>
<li><strong>Math Drills Lite</strong> (Free)</li>
<li><strong>Mathemagics</strong> &#8211; Mental Math Tricks.  This one is a little costly at $1.99, but well worth it.</li>
<li><strong>Flashcard Champion</strong> (.99)  Basic math facts for kids ages 4 &#8211; 11.</li>
<li><strong>Math Master</strong> &#8211; created by 7th graders (.99)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Social Studies</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Capitals and States</strong> offers opportunities to learn the capitals and then a chance to quiz yourself on your knowledge.</li>
<li><strong>World Countries</strong> has a fact book that includes facts about all the countries including a map, introduction information about the people, government, economy and military as well as much, much more.  It has a quiz option and an atlas.</li>
<li><strong>The White House</strong> &#8211; get up to date information directly from the Obama administration. (Free)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Reading, English, Language Arts</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Word Warp</strong> (Free) Players get a set of letters.  They have to form as many words from those letters as possible.  It is timed.  Lots of fun and word building skills.</li>
<li><strong>Blanks</strong> helps you to learn and enhance your vocab.  Once you tap on the screen you see a definition in the middle of the screen, a hole somewhere near the top left of the screen and four options to choose from to fill in the whole as per the definition. You need to drag in the choices to fit them in the whole.</li>
<li><strong>Learn Site Words</strong> &#8211; 300 Dolch site word flash cards (.99)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Music</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Pocket Piano Lite</strong> (Free) It has a mini keyboard and notes drop down over the appropriate keys on the keyboard.  Players can learn to play the songs by following the proverbial &#8220;bouncing ball&#8221;</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Physical Education</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>This is a stretch, but you could use the <strong>Level</strong> app to teach about balance. </li>
<li><strong>Calorie Counter &amp; Diet Tracker</strong></li>
<li><strong>Body Fitness &#8211; </strong>Exercise journal including over 320 exercises. (Free)</li>
<li><strong>Eat This Not That</strong> &#8211; Very expensive by iPod App terms at $4.99, but very cool.  It takes items from popular fast food restaurants and tells what are the good choices.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Science</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Hubble</strong> includes images from the hubble space shuttle as well as videos and press releases.</li>
<li><strong>Molecules</strong> gives you a 3D image of diffferent molecules.</li>
<li><strong>Distant Suns</strong> gives you pictures of the stars and constellations as well as planets.</li>
<li><strong>TCT Lite</strong> is the periodic table</li>
<li><strong>Science Facts</strong> is just that different facts.  Might be good for warm ups or writing prompts.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Foreign Language</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Free Spanish Tutor</strong></li>
<li><strong>Free French Tutor</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>If you only have one iPod you can still take advantage of the many podcasts available for educators and students.  You can put it at a center, or play it for the entire class.  If you are very ambitious you could have your class create their own podcast!  Take a look at some of the podcasts already available. </p>

<li><a href="http://pbskids.org/video/" target="_blank">Share The Earth, This is Our Earth </a>- PBS Kids and Milkshake &#8211; Video casts including animated song and dance about what kids can do to help the environment.</li>
<li><a href="http://http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/" target="_blank">Dragonfly TV </a>- PBS does Natural Science</li>
<li><a href="http://whysciencepodcast.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Why?  The Science Show for Kids </a>- Dr. Brodbeck answers questions about science for kids.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.kidsknowit.com/" target="_blank">Science Experiments for Kids</a> </li>
<li><a href="http://lunchtimeleaders.podbean.com/" target="_blank">Lunch Time Leaders </a>- created by middle school students.  Students interview leaders from around the world.</li>
<li><a href="http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/" target="_blank">Kennedy Arts Center</a> - takes you on a tour of classical music from the 1720&#8217;s to today.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.kidvision.org/" target="_blank">Kidvision</a> - Has lessons for ages 2 &#8211; 6 including health, fitness and healthy eating.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.masterylearningsystems.com/" target="_blank">Discover the Basics </a>is a math podcast that helps introduce, reinforce, and review the basics of math for all ages.</li>
<li><a href="http://rightbrainmath.com/" target="_blank">Right Brain Math</a> offers a fun way to learn about math and gain a positive attitude towards math.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Lately I have been looking at all the wonderful technology we have available to us in Wicomico County.  We have so many applications at our disposal, I often wonder if many of us know what wonderful tools we have that will help our students reach higher levels of achievement.  With that in mind I have decided to devote a few posts on this blog to sharing and investigating some of the applications available Wicomico County teachers.</p>
<p>Pixie is one of those really cool applications that you may have seen in your Novell window and wondered what is this and how can it help my students.  Pixie is a creativity tool that allows students to demonstrate understanding through pictures that they create using the computer.  That sounds complicated, but it really isn&#8217;t.  It is more than using the computer to draw.  And it is much easier than you think.  Your students will learn it before you do.  It is intuitive.  You can either have your students do the creating or you can create a learning activity for your students to interact with.  Pixie works with students of all ages.  It is simple enough for the very young, and yet the older students can take it and run with it.</p>

<p>Pixie is so simple that teachers don&#8217;t need to worry about losing instructional time to teaching the program.  Students catch on easily and are quickly working, learning the content, or demonstrating understanding.</p>
<p>Tech4learning produces Pixie and also provides wonderful resources on how to use the program as well as a large bank of <a href="http://myt4l.com/index.php?&amp;v=lp&amp;page_ac=view&amp;lpview=public&amp;lptype=lessonplans&amp;lpquery=true&amp;application_query=206&amp;gradelevel_query=&amp;lessontype_query=&amp;str_query=&amp;PHPSESSID=usfq5bmer2rqir3el5n08esq43&amp;__utma=232274563.1382595474969596100.1237163292.1237163292.1237163292.1&amp;__utmb=232274563.7.10.1237163292&amp;__utmc=232274563&amp;__utmz=232274563.1237163292.1.1.utmcsr=(direct)|utmccn=(direct)|utmcmd=(none)&amp;start=0" target="_blank">lesson ideas</a>.  Tech4learning also provides the <a href="http://tradingpost.tech4learning.com/login.php?accesscheck=%2Findex.php" target="_blank">Trading Post</a> where educators can upload templates, lesson plans, and activities to share with other educators.  You can download them and use them for free.  There is no need to re-invent the wheel.  See what other educators are doing with Pixie and try it with your students.</p>
<p><strong>Bonus Features</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Saving Options:</strong>  You can save your students&#8217; work in common formats such as .jpg which will allow you to use the drawings in other programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Photo Story 3 or Movie Maker.  Children love seeing their work displayed.  Pixie has a feature that allows you to make a slideshow of the projects with music and transitions.</li>
<li><strong>Printing:</strong>  One of the things I really like about Pixie is that it has some really cool printing options.  One of the printing options that educators will like is the trading card option.  You can have your students do a report on a historical character or book character.  Print them as trading cards (9 cards to a sheet) and then jigsaw your class.  They can share and trade their cards.  They have fun.  They share.  They learn! Another printing option is the post card.  You can have your students research places and create postcards telling about those places.  You can print them and make table tents out of them.  Use them to group your students. </li>
<li><strong>ELL:  </strong>Pixie converts from Spanish to English and visa versa.  Great for ELL or foreign language classes.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Lesson Ideas</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Research characters.  Make trading cards.  This can be adapted to any subject.  Have your students reserach a scientist, historical figure, or author.</li>
<li>Planets:  Research, Write, and Illustrate.  Put the finished products into a slideshow.</li>
<li>Poetry:  Write and illustrate poetry.  Put finished poems into a slideshow with music.</li>
<li>Angles:  Have your students take pictures of things that have angles in them.  Insert them into Pixie.  Use the drawing tools to identify the angles and tell what type of angle they are.</li>
<li>Geometry:  Have your students take pictures of things and use the drawing tools to identify the geometric shapes.</li>
<li>All About Me.  Have your students create a picture that tells all about them.  Print them and display them as an All About Me Quilt.</li>
<li>Make a Spanish/English dictionary</li>
<li>ABC Book</li>
<li>Illustrate open-ended math problems.  Show all the ways your students came up with to solve a given problem.</li>
<li>Illustrate life cycles of animals</li>
<li>Illustrate food chains</li>
<li>Create your ideal diet.  Put what you eat in a day on a food pyramid. </li>
<li>Create a postcard from a historical place or a fictional place!</li>
<li>Book report</li>
<li>Vocabulary &#8211; Word, definition and picture.  Put them in a slideshow.  Or, print them as trading cards and share for take home study.</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>     21st Century Skills is another one of those buzz words that seem to be getting thrown around and I wonder how many people using this term have actually given pause to what it means.  What are those skills that our children will be needing in the 21st Century?  Are they different from the skills we needed to have growing up?  The answer to this is yes the children of today do need to learn different skills than we were taught.  Their world is vastly different from ours and we cannot teach them using the same strategies and tools.  We need to prepare our children for a future that does not exist yet.  We need to give them skills to interact in a world that is changing quicker than we can teach.  So what are those skills?  What should the 21st Century classroom look like? </p>
<p>Today&#8217;s children need to be able to:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Communicate Effectively -</strong>  So much of today&#8217;s world revolves around communication.  Texting, e-mailing, and social networking are all forms of communication that our children will need to be able to use in order to be successful.</li>
<li><strong>Develop, Implement, and Communicate New Ideas -</strong> This is a skill that I believe that our children are desperately needing.  Many times I see children waiting to have the answers fed to them.  They need to be taught how to think for themselves.</li>
<li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_thinking"><strong>Think Critically</strong> </a>- When one uses critical thinking they evaluate or make judgements based on observations, experience and input from others.  Thinking critically involves thinking about the evidence, relevance, significance and accuracy of the information.  Children need to be taught how to use their brains to make these types of interpretations for themselvses.</li>
<li><strong>Work Collaboratively &#8211; </strong>Businesses are finding out that they are more productive when their employees work collaboratively.  It is a more efficient use of everyone&#8217;s resources and provides opportunities for creative solutions to problems.</li>
<li><strong>Problem Solve &#8211; </strong>Higher order thinking process that involves self correction and detailed problem analysis.  Students need to learn methods for understanding what the problem is and figuring out ways to solve that problem.</li>
<li><strong>Application Skills &#8211; </strong>Students need to know how to apply what they have learned to real world situations.  This is where technology really gives you the big bang for your buck!  Technology and the increasing number of Web 2.0 applications allow you real world audience, real world opportunities to solve problems, think crictically, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively.</li>
</ul>
<p>So, ask yourselves are you providing learning opportunities where these skills will be nurtured?  Here are some ideas to get you started:</p>

<p>     I think the most important thing to remember about 21st century skills is that it is not about the technology.  It is about good teaching.  Technology is the tool that lends itself to teaching these valuable skills, but good teaching is what makes it stick.  If teachers are current and planning meaningful, relevant, engaging lessons then our children will learn the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century and beyond.</p>

<div><span style="font-size: 14pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 14pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 9pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 9pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot">     According to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(web_application_hybrid)" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>, digital mashups are when data from two different sources are combined on one web application.  In the simplest terms <a href="http://www.brownbatterystudios.com/sixthings/2006/02/24/a-quick-web-20-glossary/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #800080">mashups</span></a> are two or more of anything combined together to make something new.  The term can apply to audio, video, art, or anything else you can think of.  The mashups, I want to share are these digital mashups.   They are valuable web 2.0 tools that allow novice users to create and display information in a meaningful way and share it on the web.  They are engaging for the creator and the viewer.  This is really cool because you get to hit many technology standards and vsc objectives in one lesson.  More bang for your buck.  Working smarter not harder.  I am sure there are more cliches, but I think you get the idea.  <a href="http://www.alicechristie.org/workshops/necc08/index.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #800080">Alice Christie</span></a> gave an awesome presentation where we used a digital camera, a gps device, <a href="http://maps.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Maps</a>, and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #800080">flikr</span></a> to create a virtual trip. </span></span></span></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: 14pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 14pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 9pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot"><span style="font-size: 9pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot">     Let&#8217;s imagine that you were taking your students to the Salisbury Zoo.  Groups of students could pick a theme and as they traveled through the zoo, they would take pictures of things that fit with their theme.  Each time they took a picture, they would mark the place they took the picture with the gps.  When they got back in the classroom, they would upload the coordinates into Google Maps.  They could insert a picture at the corresponding coordinate and write about what the picture was and why it belonged in the theme.  Then the trips are saved and shared among the class, so every student gets to revisit the trip from different view points.  Students have an authentic audience.  They can share their work with anyone anywhere in the world.  Many vsc objectives are met and a higher level of learning is achieved.  You have provided your students with a meaningful, engaging, rigorous and relevant activity.<span>  </span></span><span style="font-size: 9pt;color: #000000;font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&amp;quot">I have stewed on this all summer and come up with a few ideas of ways mashups might be integrated into your classrooms.<span>  </span>Check them out.<span>  </span></span></span></span></span></div>
